Fran Fine, You'll Always Be A Fashion Icon
By Alexus Mosley
She had style, she had flair, she was there, that’s how she became the Nanny. We were introduced to cosmetics saleswoman turned nanny, Fran Fine in November of 1993. Right away, audiences became infatuated with her wit, blunt honesty, charmingly nasally voice and sharp sense of humor. But nothing captured our hearts quite like the fashion.
The show’s costume designer, Brenda Cooper first met the show’s lead, Fran Drescher, on the set of a show called “Princesses,” which also starred Julie Hagerty and Twiggy. Cooper recalls the experience, saying, “Fran said to me, ‘If I ever get my own show, I want you to be my designer.’ She later ended up pitching The Nanny, and then she called me up, and I became the costume designer for the show.” With groundbreaking glamour-filled, fun looks from Moschino, Todd Oldham, Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel, Brenda Cooper made the nanny from Queens a fashion icon. She went on to be nominated for three Emmys for her work on the show. Taking one home for the show’s third season. Though it’s been well over two decades since the show’s final episode, Fran FIne is still a solid style icon that inspires designers, influencers, and fashion bloggers alike. She even has several Instagram accounts and websites dedicated solely to documenting her looks, with “What Fran Wore” by Shan Brown being amongst the most notable.
Initially, this article started off as a “10 of Fran Fine’s Best Outfits.” But after going through the archives, I found it nearly impossible to narrow it down. So, instead of doing what’s hard, I took the easy copout and created a gallery of some of my favorite looks from the fabulous, fancy Fran Fine, the fashion icon with flair from Flushing. (Try saying that five times fast.) Enjoy!
